Link between SC Badgers and Petersburg, VA Badgers

I have suspected for some time that the Badgers in Charleston, SC are linked to the Joseph Badger family in Petersburg, VA because they had the same name and the same occupations. I have recently found two newspaper articles that help to confirm that link.

1. 6/10/1851 The Georgia Telegraph
J. L. Badger
In the Hornet's Nest we find an interesting letter from J. L. Badger, giving an account of the Southern Rights Convention in Charleston, to which he was a delegate. The Charleston Courier report the following part of his speech delivered on the occasion:
"Mr. Badger, editor of the Charlotte, N.C., 'Hornet's Nest and True Southern,' a delegate from both the York and Indian Lands Association, craved the indulgence of the meeting for addressing them, but considered that he should be dead to the noblest principles of nature if he should sit and hear, unmoved, the many compliments that had been paid during the progress of the debate, to North Carolina his adopted State. His forefathers were South Carolinians - he himself was a Virginian by birth, and he was now half-way back in his pilgrimage to the Mecca of his fathers. Mr. Badger with considerable earnestness and eloquence, advocated separate State action, and assured the Convention that the moment South Carolina acted, she would touch a chord in the hearts of the young men of North Carolina, that would bring them from the mountains to the seaboard, to her aid."

Joseph Laurence/Lawrence/Laurance) Badger was born in Petersburg, VA. The 1850 NC census listed him as age 30 and the 1860 NC census listed him as age 32 so he was probably born in the 1820s. His father was Joseph Badger of Petersburg, VA. One of his brother's was William Haines Badger, from whom I am descended. Their grandfather was also the Joseph Badger who died in Petersburg, VA in 1803. He (Laurence's grandfather) was a painter, glazier, and a coach maker. The first record I can find of him in VA is in 1786.

Joseph and William Badger, two of the sons of the Boston artist, Joseph Badger, came to Charleston, SC in 1766 after the death of their father to open a painting and glazing business. Joseph was already married to Rhoda Cox with children, James (b. 1757), Joseph (b. 1761), and Rhoda (b. 1764), who were born in Boston. Joseph (husband of Rhoda Cox) died in Charleston in 1800. His son James continued in Charleston, raised a large family there and died there in 1817. I can find no record of his son Joseph remaining in Charleston and he is the right age to be the Joseph who appeared in Petersburg; however, the Petersburg's Joseph Badger, could also be the son of one of the other Badgers who were there. I can find no record of William remaining in Charleston like his brother Joseph did.

2. 8/7/1799 South Carolina State Gazette and Timothy's Daily Advisor:
"Petersburg, July 30
Died, a few days ago, in this town, Mr. Jonathan Badger, Painter, lately from Charleston."

This shows another link between the Badgers of Charleston and Petersburg. I don't know the parents of this Jonathan Badger, but he was a painter in Charleston. Jonathan's children were Samuel James and Mary Amelia who were born in 1792 and 1793, respectively. Since his son is named Samuel, he might be a son of the Samuel Badger who married Abigail Jarvis. That Samuel was a brother to the Joseph Badger who moved from Boston to Charleston and did spend some time in Charleston according to some letters. There was also a Daniel Badger who married Christian Eagle who might be a candidate as his father. Daniel did have a son John, who was a painter.

There was another Jonathan Badger of Charleston who was a cabinet maker who left for Providence, RI in 1770, but there is no record of his having a son named Jonathan (children were Sarah, William, Mary and Hannah). This Jonathan died in 1774 in RI. I don't know who his parents were either, but the Boston artist, Joseph Badger, painted a picture of Sarah just as he did for his grandson, James Badger of Charleston. (Listed as Sarah Badger Noyes painting).

So although I can definitely say there is a link between the Badgers of Boston, Charleston, and Petersburg, exactly how the links fit together is still unclear. Perhaps someone out there has some more info on how these folks are linked and would be willing to share information.
