I have a mystery to solve. I have John Badger born about 1836 in Shrewsbury but do not know his parents. He turns up in the 1841 census with Joseph and Sarah, 65, in St Chad Shrewsbury. Joseph is a shoemaker. In the household is also Charles who is four years older than John. Joseph and Sarah could be grandparents but in the 1851, when it is only John living with them, John's relationship to them is not stated. In 1852 Joseph and Sarah died. In 1861 John is married to Helen (can not find the reference) and they have Emma, 4, born in Wolverhampton, staffordshire (no reference can be found). They are once again living in St Chad, Shrewsbury. John is working as a tinplate worker and gasfitter. (I have found that Charles was also working in this profession and his census entries were easy to find). By 1871 they are living in Rhyl, Denbighshire and John is unemployed. They now have a son Arthur who was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire, aged 6 years. Now there is the first uncertainty. It looks as though there are two more people living with them as there is Ann Williams 71, mother, born Flintshire and Ellinor, 17 daughter, born Flintshire (obviously not Ann's daughter due to the age difference). Could this be Helen's mother? Helen was born in Alberbury, Shropshire which is not that far away. However the main problem that I have is that this is where the trail runs dry. I can not find any of them in the 1881 census. Did they all die or migrate? Arthur is still in England as in the 1891 census he turns up in Crewe, Cheshire, married to Elizabeth, with a son Walter, 3, who was born in Crewe. Arthur is working as a house painter. He is still there in 1901 with more children and I know what happened to one of his children. Any ideas about when John and Helen went? This is not the same family that was in St Julian, Shropshire.
