FIRST GENERATION
1. MARY A. FONDA was born on 15 Jan 1827 in NORTH FERRISBURG, ADDISON CO., VT.1,2 She appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record in 1850 in LEWIS, ESSEX CO., NY.1 She appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record in 1880 in EVANGELINE AND WILSON, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.3 Mary, age 53, is listed with her husband, Reuben Sampson, a Farmer, age 56, and their three youngest children, William, age 22, Homer, age 14, and Lucey, age 11. She died on 17 Feb 1890.
She was married to REUBEN E. SAMPSON (son of EPHRAIM SAMSON JR. and LAURA SMITH) on 31 Jan 1850 in NY.4,5 Reuben and Mary were probably married in Essex Co. NY. Their marriage was performed by Reuben's uncle, Loyal Samson, Justice of the Peace. The marriage certification letter written by Loyal states,
"This is to certify that Mr. Reubin E. Samson of Lewis in the State of New York and Miss Mary Fonda of Lewis in the State of New York were by me joined together in Holy Matrimony on the 31 Day January 1850 in the presence of Nathaniel Mason and Cordelia Samson."

REUBEN E. SAMPSON was born on 11 Aug 1824 in LEWIS, ESSEX CO., NY.1,2 According to Rueben's Military Discharge papers, he was born in New York, NY. He appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record in 1850 in LEWIS, ESSEX CO., NY.1,6 According to the Census Record, Reuben and wife Mary were living with his uncle Loyal Samson's family. He appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record in 1855 in KENOSHA, KENOSHA CO., WI.7 He was listed in the State Census Index for Kenosha County. He was a Carpenter before 1861 in MILWAUKEE, MILWAUKEE CO., WI.8 He served in the military between Apr 1861 and May 1863 in the American Civil War.8,9 At the age of 35yrs. on 17 April 1861, Reuben enlisted as a Private in the Union Army and served his required 3 months for the United States as a Drummer in Company "G", 1st Infantry Regiment of Wisconsin Voluntary. He was Mustered-Out [discharged] at Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 21 August 1861. On 2 September 1861, he re-enlisted as a Private in "E" Company, 1st Infantry Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers. Six weeks later on 14 October 1861 he was promoted to "Full Musician" and enlisted in [or transferred to] Band Company, 1st Infantry Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers. He Mustered-Out of this unit on 30 August 1862. Reuben then on 29 September 1862 re-enlisted again in the 1st Infantry Regiment Wisconsin Volunteers and was assigned to Company "F" [or "S"] at the rank of "Principle Musician". He received his final discharge 8 months later on 2 May 1863. He was described as "5'3", light complected with blue eyes and light hair" on his military discharge papers in Aug 1861 in MILWAUKEE, MILWAUKEE CO., WI.8 He appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record on 15 Aug 1870 in CHARLEVOIX TWP., CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.10 He owned 160 acres of land on 15 Aug 1876 in CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.11 Reuben was issued a deed at the Traverse City Land Office per the 1862 Homestead Act. The land was located in Township "33 N", Range "6 W", Section "36". He appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record in 1880 in EVANGELINE AND WILSON, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.3 Reuben, a farmer, age 56, is listed as head of household living with his wife Mary, age 53, and their three youngest children, William, age 22, Homer, age 14, and Lucey, age 11. He was living on 16 Nov 1898 in BAIRD, CALLAHAN CO., TX.12 He died on 30 Sep 1906 in BOYNE CITY, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.4,6 MARY A. FONDA and REUBEN E. SAMPSON had the following children:

4 iii. WILLIAM R. SAMPSON was born on 16 May 1858 in WI.4,6 He appeared on the U.S. Federal Census Record in 1880 in EVANGELINE AND WILSON, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.3 He was a Farmer in 1880 in EVANGELINE AND WILSON, CHARLEVOIX CO., MI.3 William, age 22, is listed in the household with his parents and younger siblings, Homer, and Lucey. He died on 21 May 1911 in OK.13 A story from oral family history, as told by William's grandnephew Harvey Kyes, indicates that sometime before he died, William was living in Santa Clara Co., CA, in the Morgan Hill or Gilroy area, and for some unknown reason, moved to Tennessee with his brother Homer. Homer gained employment as a skilled carpenter and blacksmith, but William had no trade skills and took employment as a laborer in the mines of Tennessee. William was married, living and working at the mines during the week and returned home to his wife on the weekends. The story goes that at some point William, who was paying for room and board near the mines, determined that his pay check was not covering his expenses while living at the mines and traveling the long distance back home on the weekends. On one Monday morning he started his trip to the mines but apparently decided not to continue and returned home. Upon his arrival, he found his wife in bed with two other men. He reportedly then shot and killed both men and his wife. He later told his brother Homer of the incident and said that he had to leave the area and told Homer that he would contact him sometime later in Michigan [The Sampson family had their roots in Michigan.]. The story ends with William moving to Oklahoma, possibly the Elk City area, and taking a job as a U.S. Marshal.
The story is quite intriguing, but as of this writing, further research is needed to confirm the facts. He was buried in East Fairlawn Cemetery, BECKHAM CO., OK.6
