Fonda origin is Trieste - Italia

Today in Italy live almost half of all inhabitants with surname Fonda, 56% of thereof is in Trieste (world telephone directories): see appendix. In Italian, word "Fonda" means "money-bag". By oral transmission Fondas was realy known as tradesmen.

Between abt.1290-1360 lived tradesman "Latcho de Corgnale", from Trieste. He is mentioned in years 1328, 1335 and 1347 as tradesman with corn on, so called, "Karsten road", one of the most important European trade route in 14th century.

Corgnale is today a villiage (with name Lokev - 500 inhabitant) in Slovenia (18 km near Trieste-Italy) . In the middle ages this villiage was very important, because throughit passed one of the most frequently trade route from Venezia,Trieste (Italy) through Ljubljana and Celje (Slovenia) to Buda/Pest (Hungary) and Wien (Austria) and back.

Today near Celje is also small village named "Latkova Vas" (Latchos village) where also live few Fonda families.

Almost certain, Fonda originate in Trieste and, maybe, "Latcho de Corgnale", was the first person who got title Fonda because of his bag, which is probably carring with.

My goal is to tie "Latcho de Corgnale", "Latkova vas" and "Fonda". The first trials promises well, although there aren't a lot of data from that time.

On the other hand, probably the first Fonda came to USA (Albany, NY) from Netherlands (Agum, Friesland). When his parents, father Douw FONDA (born 1580) - his family origin is Genova, Italy, and mother Hilletgen CLAESDR (born abt.1595) died, Jellis Douwese FONDA (1616-1662/66) with his wife Hester Douwese JANS and children Douw Jellisse FONDA (Nov 24 1641-Nov 24 1700), Greetien Jellise FONDA (born Sep 22 1643) and Sara FONDA (born Jun 18 1645) arrived to USA where he was first mentioned in Oct 15 1651. (internet browse)

How and when his father (or forfather) arrived to Netherlands from Genova, Italy is unknown. Today nobody with surname Fonda lives in Netherlands (world telphone directories).
