My great-grandparents' family (consisting of surnames of Gagnier/Gagne, LaCroix, Poitras, Lalonde, and LaRocque) came from Charlottenburg, Glengarry County, Ontario in the early part of the 20th century; they settled in DeKalb, St. Lawrence County, New York. This family has been traced back to one Joseph Gain (most likely Gagne, but plausibly Gagnon), according to the 1881 Ontario census born in Quebec in 1803. I have found no record of a birth for Joseph anywhere in Quebec (which isn't to say that it doesn't exist somewhere...) My question is: is there anyone out there who knows anything about a Gagne (or perhaps Gagnon) family in this particular county in the early part of the 19th century? Also, were there Gagnons who changed the spelling of their name to Gain/Gains/Gaines? I know this is a not uncommon Anglicization of Gagne/Gagnier. Any help would be most appreciated.
