My family and I have traced the La Brie back to 1671. We can't find any older than Joseph Mignault-Labrie. The story that was handed down to us was that La Brie was an exclusive name that was first in Canada. We were told the first La Brie that was in North America, was a political reformer who was exiled, and he was sent to Canada. The ship he was traveling on was ship wrecked on an unknown island, and he made shelters and saved people. We were told that he was given the name "La Brie" which originally meant "shelter" or "lean to." The other bit of information we were given was that his previous last name was "Mowatt." However the oldest La Brie we can find was Joseph Mignault-Labrie. We can only assume that over the years and different pronunciations that it was originally "Mignault" and it got confused as the generations went on. If you found any La Brie that have been in North America I would like to know. From what I can tell, the La Brie originated from Canada. After a couple of generations most dropped the "Mignault." At least, that's how the story goes.
The details may have become skewed, but this was the story as it was handed down to me over the last couple hundred of years.
