The name Raftery is derived from the Gaelic O'Reachtaire. The Gaelic translation of the name itself means 'decree'.
The Raftery and Rafferty septs were, according to genealogists, NOT related.The O'Raithbheartaigh (Rafferty) sept were said to have originated in Sligo,Tyrone and Donegal,while Mayo was home to the O'Reachtaire (Raftery)sept.
As for the origins of the name itself, I would not agree with the suggestion that the name 'O'Reachtaire' was based or partially based on the septs occupation as potatoe farmers. Remember we are talking about ancient times, the pototatoe was introduced to Ireland by Sir Walter Raleigh during the sixteenth century so I do not think that particular theory stands up to scrutiny.
I would appreciate any new information regarding the origins of the O'Reachtaire sept.
