On June 16th the 508th Regiment was in Division reserve northwest of Etienville. The 3d Battalion moved 2 miles north of St. Sauveur and relieved the 3rd Battalion 505 PIR protecting the highway between St. Sauveur and Cherbourg. The remainder of the division moved west of St. Sauveur-le-Vicomte preparing to relieve the 505th. The 3rd Battalion was under Division control. It received spasmodic artillery fire in its flank-protecting position. On the 17th of June an aircraft, believed to be a U.S. P-47, but which may have been an enemy FW-190 fighter, strafed the battalion.

This is from the History of the 508th 1946 by William Lord. It is an excellent resource. Other great books are A Devils Tales by Zig Boroughs and The History of the 508th by Dominique Francois. The Lord book is the official history and is occasionally available on E-bay. Zig Boroughs' book is the personel accounts of the paratroopers on the ground and in the air. Mr. Boroughs and Mr. Lord are both veterans of the 508th. Mr. Francois has done a wonderful book in English and French to honor the men of the 508th. His family was rescued by paratroopers after being buried in the wreckage of thier home. Never think that the French people have forgotten the sacrifices that were made to liberate their country.

The final reunion of the WWII veterans of the 508th will be Oct. 17-21 2004 in Gainsville Florida.
